Top 5 tips for Designing Your own Kitchen

by admin on April 27, 2009

Planning your kitchen layout is not a task to be taken lightly and you may need to get a professional in to help. However, with a little bit of common sense then it is more than possible for you to design your own kitchen with a minimum of fuss. If you take it upon yourself to cut corners, rush or ignore rules when measuring then you will be making a lot more work and stress for yourself. Kitchen design isn’t as difficult as you think it is so if you follow these simple rules then you should be fine.

1) Make sure that all measurements are taken in millimetres. In order to avoid wasting time refitting units later on it is advisable to measure everything THREE times. The reason is if ONE of those measurements is different from the other two then you will need to re-measure again. It may sound tedious but this can be a genuine time saver and you’ll be glad of the accurate measurements when all those cabinets and cupboards you ordered fit perfectly first time.

2) When measuring your kitchen, it is a good idea to note down all measurements down on a basic diagram.

3) Measure all the following: ceiling heights (taking into consideration sloping ceilings), window and door frames, gas and water pipes, radiators and power sockets.

4) Think carefully about the position of all appliances. The ‘work triangle’ of your kitchen is defined by the positioning of your sink, oven and fridge. Try and keep this triangle as compact as possible to minimise travel between each.

5) If you are at all worried or uncertain about doing any of the above, then consider hiring a builder to help with your kitchen design and installation. When looking for a tradesman make sure that you enquire as to their kitchen design skills and experience. You may be surprised at how many are only too happy to assist with the kitchen planning and design stage.

An extremely useful addition to the toolkit of even a novice kitchen designer is a good CAD software package that will make the process much easier and requires only a minimum of technical know how.
